ABOUT DEBI

My Bio

If I were scheduling a speaker for a church affiliated event, or enlisting the help of a Biblical counselor, I would certainly want to know about her background, family, and doctrinal persuasion! So while I’m not fond of the “bio” and am not comfortable with the kind of self promotion so often seen on websites, I do want to invite scrutiny and the careful selection of a speaker or counselor.  If you don’t find the information you desire in this section, please do not hesitate to contact me through my ministry administrator, Marilyn Backus or, of course, my pastor, Brian Dunlop, for references.  And, by all means, you are welcome to talk to my children, as well!

My Church & Salvation

I grew up in a wonderful, committed Christian home and was privileged to have active Christian grandparents, aunts and uncles, as well as godly parents! I trusted Christ as my Savior after hearing the Gospel in Primary Church as a child, then followed the Lord in believer’s baptism a short time later. Growing up in a family of deacons, missionaries, teachers and servants of the Lord Jesus not only inspired me to follow their example, but prepared me to serve and teach as well. My mother began teaching me how to present a Bible lesson to children while I was still in high school, and thus began my love for the Bible and teaching.

After marrying Tom while he was still in college, we gave our lives to serve together as the Lord would be pleased to use us. We took II Corinthians 8:5 as our own special “commitment to serve” verse and gave ourselves to the Lord first, and then to our local Church. “And this they did, not as we hoped, but first gave their own selves to the Lord, and unto us by the will of God.” Like the family of Stephanas mentioned in I Corinthians 16, we “addicted ourselves to the ministry of the saints.” Now, after 47 wonderful years of serving together with my husband, Tom, I am continuing without him as the Lord opens opportunities for me.

My church home is Lighthouse Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Brian Dunlop. Tom and I thoroughly enjoyed being active members in our church for many years, and I would be pleased to stay for the remainder of my life! Presently I teach a ladies’ Sunday school class on Sunday mornings and serve as a staff counselor.

My Life Verse

PROVERBS 22:19-21

That thy trust may be in the Lord, I have made known to thee this day, even to thee. Have not I written to thee excellent things in counsels and knowledge,That I might make thee know the certainty of the words of truth; that thou mightest answer the words of truth to them that send unto thee?

My Husband

After being married for 47 years to my childhood sweetheart, I recently lost my husband to CNS Lymphoma after he had survived a lung transplant and many complications. I rejoice knowing that Tom is in Heaven, healed and happy, with his Lord and Savior.  Tom was active in church ministries, serving as a committed deacon, choir director and adult Bible teacher. He taught Bible classes for Pacific Baptist College and thoroughly enjoyed teaching Bible students. Tom was a terrific Bible scholar and teacher and had a heart to simply serve and assist his church and pastor in whatever area there was a need. Tom retired after a successful career as an executive and program director with Raytheon Company here in Southern California. He enthusiastically supported and encouraged my ministry activities.  He will be greatly missed as I begin this new season of my life.

A Word from Tom

Written May, 2006

Early in our married life together, God gave us two wonderful children to rear. Debi went into child rearing with the same zeal and enthusiasm (and hard work) that characterizes her approach to all her activities. It wasn’t long before other mothers started coming to her for advice on this problem or that. Her reply always was to turn to the Word of God for the answers. By God’s grace, she developed an uncanny ability to apply biblical principles to daily living and parenting. Sometime later, under the auspices of our pastor, she began a Ladies’ Bible study for the stay-at-home moms, whereby she could multiply the gifts and experience that God had given her. During the course of this ministry, many counseling opportunities challenged her to continue to develop the skill in practical Bible application that had become a characteristic of her ministry. Now that our children our grown, she is able to teach Christian womanhood, parenting, and counseling to ladies all over the USA and even into Europe and Asia. I am thankful to God that he has enabled my wife to enjoy such a rich ministry to so many. I am also thankful for pastors who have seen the benefits, and supported her in her ministry. I count it a privilege to be a partner with her in this ministry as she has been a partner in mine.

My Children

Tom and I were blessed with two children. Our son, Thomas, is married with five children. He is a pastor in rural Michigan and a talented musician. His wife, Martha, is an accomplished musician and registered nurse. She is also a devoted wife and mother who has set aside her nursing career in order to raise her children. Martha (formerly Martha Mulfinger) keeps quite busy homeschooling the children and participating with her husband in ministry. They are based in Reading, Michigan.

Our daughter Michelle is a graduate of Bob Jones University and is married to Dr. Lee Brock. Michelle became a full-time mother and homemaker with the birth of their children, after having been an English and Special Ed professor at Maranatha Baptist College in Wisconsin. She has written an excellent book entitled “What Is Modesty?”, which we believe is the best available on the subject! Michelle has also written an insightful book every parent should read entitled “Parenting with Mercy”, which is a good companion to my study “Parenting with Wisdom”. And every child could benefit from her book entitled “Topical Bible for Kids”. Lee and Michelle have three children and live in Honolulu, Hawaii, where Lee is serving as a neonatologist in the Air Force. Michelle and Lee stay actively involved in their local church.

Teaching Experience

The Lord has graciously allowed me to teach various ladies’ Bible classes and given speaking opportunities with ladies’ groups over the past 35 years. After being a full time homemaker and home-schooling our children through high school, I returned to college along with the kids and eventually decided the Lord was leading me to give myself full time in ministry and Biblical counseling rather than seek career opportunities. Besides retreats and special ladies’ meetings, I have enjoyed teaching ladies’ soul winning and visitation, Christian parenting classes, various Bible studies and ladies’ Sunday school classes. I began writing Bible studies for my ladies’ class about 35 years ago and began reformatting the materials into Bible study books, which have become a helpful tool in counseling and mentoring women. I teach seminars on the material in these books and enjoy speaking at various conferences throughout the states. My greatest burden is for the problems Christian families face today, and my greatest love is ministering to women who have a heart for their family and children.

Biblical Counseling

The Lord has given me the marvelous opportunity of developing a ladies’ Biblical counseling ministry for Christian women, originally in the Los Angeles area through my local church, entitled Women Counseling Women. This training program has now expanded to allow me the blessing of traveling and teaching women across the nation and internationally. I began counseling women over 30 years ago and presently hold two certifications as a biblical counselor. My classroom work and in-service practicum was in the masters level curriculum of the Christian Counseling and Educational Foundation in conjunction with the faculty and counseling department of Westminster Theological Seminary in Escondido, California. I am presently involved in serving as a staff counselor for Lighthouse Baptist Church and Christian School in LaVerne, California and teach a ladies’ Bible class during the Sunday school hour at Lighthouse.
